I am currently in a PhD program and this book is a great step by step for how to get started. The helpful tips have definitely helped me as a student returning after a while out of academia. Adjusting to academic writing has been such aa struggle but this guide makes the process much easier. It has also been helpful when I feel that I have hit a writers block.

needed this for school, bought the kindle version and instantly downloaded it to start reading. one note though the PC kindle software seems to be glitchy because when I buy books and try to download/open them up I keep getting an error that says "REMOVE BOOK FROM DEVICE AND TRY AGAIN" no matter how many times I try that it does not work, the solution to that is to de register the software and then reregister it. I HAVE TO DO THIS EVERY TIME I BUY/DOWNLOAD A KINDLE BOOK ON AMAZON. That almost stopped me from buying this book in kindle format. the books gets 5 stars, but the kindle PC software gets -5 stars. I am currently in an independent study course about modern political history of the Middle East and I selected this book to read for the course. I appriecate the opposing viewpoints in the essays but there is nothing here that will drastically change your mind one way or other. I did find myself wondering why certain elements or events, that in my mind are very important, were left out by the authors. The short chapters enable a quick read and allow for a comparative analysis for each chapter. There were also times when I was disappointed by an author for not mentioning events or elements that I consider important or only mentioning them in passing. This is a good reader that will give you more questions than answers but you can then go and find those answers because you have a working knowledge on the subject.

If you want to know about the Middle East, this is your book. It's a composite of articles from books written by experts in the field. Check out the chapter headings and read some of the introductions to each section and also each article.

Required for my College level history course. My only criticism was that the writers seemed to be biased to the liberal side. The only Chapter that was even slightly critical of Islam by Lee Harris , I note , is not included in the new edition of the same book.

Introduction

"What should I do?" is a question that just about every living, breathing human being has asked at some point in his or her life. Some folks ask family and friends for advice, others seek guidance from a therapist, still others call upon a psychic or astrologer to illuminate the situation. No matter the method used in this world of I-wanted-it-yesterday, people want their answers delivered quickly.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of divination techniques available that give pretty near instant answers. They range from the familiar, like Crystallomancy (using a crystal ball), to the more obscure, like Capnomancy (the study of smoke rising from a fire). By using The Oracle Book you'll be practicing a form of Bibliomancy -- the answering of a question by means of randomly choosing a word or passage from a book.

Though the Bible was historically the book of choice for Bibliomancy, people have also used ancient Greek epics, poetry or Shakespearean works. Many believe Bibliomancy is the Western world's answer to the I Ching: The Book of Questions, a divination system developed by the Chinese over four thousand years ago. When people consult the I Ching, they throw yarrow stalks or coins and interpret the way in which they fall as the answer to their question.

Nowadays, most people don't have yarrow stalks handy, or much patience to decipher cryptic messages. That's where The Oracle Book comes in. This handy do-it-yourself divination tool takes its name from the oracles of ancient Greece -- these were humans who acted as divine intermediaries, delivering messages from the gods to their earthbound peers. In teaching the sounds and letters of Arabic, this text provides a variety of exercises aimed at developing all skills: reading, listening, writing, speaking, and cultural understanding. In order to teach Arabic as used by Arabs, including social aspects of Arab culture, this book and its accompanying CDs introduce the student to the colloquial dialect of Cairo, the most widely spoken and understood in the Arabic-speaking world. "Alif Baa" introduces about 150 basic vocabulary words, including social greetings and politeness formulae, most of which are common to standard Arabic and one or more dialects. The book and CDs focus on reading skills, aural recognition, and oral production through extensive drills and accompanying videos. Including authentic materials from newspapers and magazines and skits filmed in Egypt, as well as an English-Arabic glossary, "Alif Baa" lays the groundwork for the rest of the Al-Kitaab language program.
